    Brian H. Lowy
    Instructor in Paralegal Studies

"The courses you teach in Paralegal Studies are in high demand because you are in high demand. Despite your full-time position as a Principal Court Attorney for the New York Supreme Court, you have found the time to offer your talents to the Paralegal Program for the past 20 years. As a graduate of the first class of the City University of New York Law School, whose motto is “Law in the Service of Human Needs,” you wanted to give back to the community. Your students describe you as patient and informative, especially adept at teaching “adults coming to class after a long day at work,” even in horrendous weather, and motivating them to conquer their fear of doing legal research.” As part of your dedication you have developed materials that other instructors have incorporated into their own syllabi, and you recently put them online to save students the cost of textbooks. Colleagues have praised your ability to turn “complex criminal issues into understandable ones” and your special knack for encouraging participation by all. Beyond the classroom you consistently attend Continuing Education’s Open House three times a year to help recruit students. In recognition of your service to your profession and deep commitment to your students, to the Paralegal Program, and to the American legal system, it gives me great pleasure to present you with the 2009 President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching."
